Re: meaning and origin of name
in reply to a message by Yamna
Not much to go on here, but I'm going to assume this is a female name. From the sound, my initial guesses would be Hebrew or Arabic. It's not in the Bible Names Dictionary (25,000 names!), so we try Arabic."Yaminah" is listed as an Arabic woman's name meaning "right and proper", so unless you come back and say your family is from southern India, say, I'm gonna hazard that's the same as "Yamna".Due to transliteration flexibility from Arabic, the difference in English spelling is probably unremarkable. For example, we say in English the names Khaddafi and Qadaffi -- same Libyan asshole (sorry). Also, Moslem and Muslim, which I think changed in the media one day when I wasn't paying attention. So Yamna and Yaminah are quite possibly one and the same. Hope that helps, but someone else may know better and different. Salaam.
