What is Sy short for?
I have sometimes heard of men called Sy (sp?), but I can't figure out what name it is usually short for. The only thing I can think of is Silas. Do you have any suggestions?

I also found SYLVAN*, but this of course is close to Sylvester.(Kolatch, Dictionary of First Names, 1990)

Interesting, the first name I think of with Sy (or Cy) is Cyril. I've never seen it Syril though. I also thought of Silas. Interesting to see the names others come up with when given a nn.

I've seen Cy a few times. Works as a nn for Cyrus.

Normally "Cy" would be short for Cyrus, but the most famous Cy I can think of was actually so called from an abbreviation of a nickname "Cyclone".

I have heard it for Sylvester. Silas makes sense as would Simon.

I bet that's it.Thanks,
I bet it is Sylvester. I knew there was an Sy- name that I couldn't think of, and I think that's it. That's also a name that people would be likely to shorten. Well, that's not great news. I like Sy, but I'm not crazy about Sylvester.
Simon is also a good suggestion.
