Here's a guess: Just like Fitzroy is a corruption of the froggy "fils du roi" (son of the King), maybe Fitzgerald is a corruption of "son of Gerald" (fils de Gerald Le spear chucker).
I've got a mouse
and he hasnt got a house
I dont know why
I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old
but he's a good mouse
