Sylvania as a male first name?
My great-grandfather's first name was SYLVANIA (maybe spelled SILVANIA), a most unusal name that I can not find any information about. He disappeared when my grandfather was 8 and was never heard from again. I am searching for anything I can about him, to help my father piece his history together. Does anyone know anything about this name - it's origin? country/ethnic connection? Anything? I would appreciate any information or leads to links that might help me in my search.
Thanks!

Perhaps it's a form of the Latin name Silvanus? The name can be found in this database.Regards,Lu

Accurate derivation, but "Sylvania" proper would mean "forested country", as in Pennsylvania = "Penn's woods"
