In South Africa Dana is pronounced DAH na (not DAY na) and is exclusively masculine; it's a standard-issue nickname for Daniel. It may well be used in the Netherlands as well; I don't know.

So, if there's a link to the Low Countries in your family, it might be worth investigating.
