Here are two etymological shots in the dark.

1. Canecia may be related to Cannaceae, genus of tropical plants, with large leaves and often with showy flowers. A related plant is the Indian shot (Canna Indica), whose seeds have been used as flintlocks and ornaments.

2. Possible relation to the latin Latin "canis", meaning dog. In this respect, the pronounciation of Canecia is strikingly similar to that of Caniche, the French Poodle.
