Remember this name from my childhood reading and have always wondered about it - after searching the Web today, think it's probably from the Ellery Queen Jr. mysteries, e.g. "The Black Dog Mystery". (Yeah, I go back a ways.) Found several instances of modern use, including the poet Djuna Barnes. But no on-line reference I have found includes it. Anyone know?
