My name, Davi
I would like to know if anyone knows about the name Davi. Accoarding to this website, it is a portugese version of David and is masculine. However, Im a woman and want to know if anyone has heard of this as a feminine name. I have no idea of the possible origin but have heard many theories. Ive heard it is isreali, feminine of david, the most. Ive also heard it is indian. It is pronounced like Dahvy, if that makes sense. Any info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Im tired of the blank looks I get when Im asked what it means and I can only say I dont know. Thanks, Davi

There is an Indian name Devi, though I doubt Davi is a form of that. It is derived from a very old Indoeuropean root cognate with Zeus, Jovis, Tiw, and Tyr. The original meaning of that root is bright/day, but it has been heavily mythologized, and today the `bright sky father' may start to capture some of the connotation.
In any case, deva derived from this is loosely translated as god, to the extent concepts can be translated across religions, and devI is a feminine version of the same word. When the spiritual entity is conceived as devI, it is usually a personification of the primeaval source of all power, the undifferentiated power to change, generate, protect, and destroy.
But, as I said, I doubt Davi is related to this.

Davi as a feminine name is probably a nickname for the feminine forms of David, such as Davina and Davida (click hyperlinks for more info), which has been used as a whole name in this case. It has the same meaning as David: "beloved". Nice meaning :-) The Indian name people are thinking of is Devi, which means "Goddess".:-)
