There is a post a little ways down by LeeLou asking the same question about the name Balian and it seems like the concensus is that no one knows the origin and that no one likes the name.

I have to agree don't know the origin or history, exccept that it is a traditional last name, isn't it Orlando Blooms characters name in the movie Kingdom of Heaven??

Bad name anyway.
