Almanzo...
In the Little House books, Almanzo Wilder said, "It was wished on me. My folks have got a notion there always has to be an Almanzo in the family, because 'way back in the time of the Crusades there was a Wilder went to them, and an Arab or somebody saved his life. El Manzoor, the name was. They changed it after a while in England..."Does anyone know what El Manzoor means?Y :)

"Tracing their origins to early Islamic caliphs who governed
northern Africa and southern Spain (at one point, their troops reached Tours, France), the Moors united under a strong leader, Al Mansour (also spelled Almanzor). During the tenth century, Al Mansour brought all of central and southern Spain into his empire."http://www.publicsectorconsultants.com/Documents/year1000/year_ten_hundred.pdf

I've learned that Mansur (with its variant spellings_ means "victorious" and also "Divinely aided."El is just the Latinized verion of Al which means the. Thus Al-Mansur (the victorious) got turned into Almanzo.Looli,
(which is Arabic for pearls)

“El-Manzoor” means “The Victorious” in Arabic. More familiar English transliterations of this popular name in the Arabic states today are: "Mansur" and "Mansoor".-- Nanaea
