Archivesmeaning of a name
My grandmother was from Norway and her name was Calma. I can not find this name on any list! Does anyone have information about this name?

Calma sounds *very* non-Scnadinavian to me. "Kalma" is a Finnsih word (mostly used in poetic language) meaning "death". Strangely enough, I found that one boy was christened Kalma in Finland in the early 20th century.

Calma isn't a Norwegian name and at the moment there's nobody in Norway with that name.
I'd guess it's rather a Spanish name meaning "silence, slackness".
In Norway names are usually written with K instead of C, so your grandmother probably got a foreign and very exotic name from her parents.
The closest Scandinavian connection I can think of is the name of the Swedish town Kalmar (known for the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Sweden and Norway from 1397-1523). The name of the town comes from the name of a ten-armed squid, but I really doubt that this has got something to do with the name!
