"Aiga" is the German rendering of the name "Aega", from Greek mythology. She was one of the nurses of the infant Zeus. (In some versions of the story, Aega was unable to manage, and so Zeus was turned over to the goat Amalthea for suckling.) Zeus later changed Aega into the constellation of Capella the Goat. Still later, while fighting the Titans, Zeus was commanded by an oracle to cover himself with the hide of Aega for protection. It is this shield which then became known as the "aegis" of Zeus.
