Names can often signify things beyond their literal meanings, through historical and literary associations. The name "Lydia" does signify "beauty and beloved" if one views that name in the context of the Lydia who is mentioned in the Christian New Testament. The name can also signify "Christian convert", as that particular Lydia (who obviously popularized the name for subsequent generations) is noted by Christians as having been the first European converted to Christianity by the apostle Paul.
