Re: Svante (Swedish regent)
in reply to a message by Frank
It is probably a male name of Slavic origin meaning "holy". One of the main Slavic gods is called Svantevid ("holy ruler"). A famous person bearing that name is Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius, winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903.

Thanks for the response, Evaria. Very complete!Originally, I had wondered whether it was at all related to the Frisian woman's name Swantje (small swan/kleiner Schwan). I could not have been further from the truth!
