Almost all names were originally words, or based on words, in other languages or older forms of the language the name is used in. This is why they have meanings. The word Mallory is based on means "unfortunate", and therefore Mallory means that, and nothing else.

If the name Mallory was also based on another word in another language, it might have a different meaning; but it isn't, so it doesn't.
