Yes, there's a word "ele". And yes, Elle is pronounced the same as ele (which means "he"). I used to live in Brazil. I never met an Elle down there. I don't know if it would fly or not, but I'm leaning more towards the not. I did meet one Ellen, however.

I could give you a huge long list of names that are used down there, if you like.
