Zaire is a transfer from the place name system to the given name system. It was the official name of what is now once again the Democratic Republic of the Congo between 1971 and 1997.
Zaire was a Portuguese name for the Congo River, and is thought to have been derived from the Kikongo language word nzai, which meant "river".
