The French Helvie comes from the Latin name Helvius, Helvia, from helvus, "type of yellow, blond", or from Helvii, name of a people in the Roman Gaul. It was known because it was Seneca the Elder's wife's name.

Léolie is a French name made up in Quebec in 19th c. taking the beginning Léo- (present in names like Léonie) and adding the ending -lie (present in names like Émilie, Julie...).
