My guess it's an Americanized/Anglicized spelling of the German word Wildfang, meaning a wild child, little rascal, scamp, etc. Upon seeing Wildfang I think most people would assume to pronounce it like the English words wild and fang, so the spelling would have been changed to closer represent the correct German pronounciation vilt-fong.
