It is cruel to want your child to fight. I have a son who is not a "macho" male. He loves the arts and that is o.k. If I had given him a name that would have encouraged ridicule he could have been seriously hurt by now.

Megane RenaultI dont know if parenting licenses are required anywhere in the world, but the French do have a "name police". I remember from last year's news, French authorities forbade a family called Renault to name their daughter Megane, because there exists a best-selling froggy-mobile called "Renault Megane," and the girl would accordingly be susceptible to ridicule from her peers!!!!

Was your first son killed on the playground? Well then, serves you right, for not having given him a coooool name like "Rudiford".-- Nanaea

Hey, Big Carl , I'm just curious. You said "If I were to have a son AGAIN..."That implies you've got a son now and named him something else. Is he Little Carl ? If not, what? You could always get him karate lessons if the fighting's a good thing (or send him to a tough school, like I did mine, altho not on purpose). Also: why Rudiford? I can think of a lot of names that'd make him fight more than that one!

Why in God's great name would you ever do that to a poor defenseless child? No one deserves that. Really.Sarahjeanne

The Philosopher and the unsuited breedersIn Norway there was a case some years ago. The parents wanted to name their child with binary code since that would fit the information age better they said. Naming the child thus was disallowed the parents who then wanted to name the child "a".
That too was disallowed and since the parents refused to come up with another name the court deemed the boys name: AlbinI remember an unemployed philosopher, whom I once met in a train, said to me:
"Only the qualified are allowed to work, but even the most disqualified are allowed to breed. It should be the other way around."One may disagree, but even then it is words worth pondering.

I believe the movie is Parenthood in which Keanu Reeve's character says (and I'm paraphrasing as I haven't seen the movie in years): "You need a license to own a dog, to catch a fish, but they'll let any damn idiot be a father".

"Only the qualified are allowed to work, but even the most disqualified are allowed to breed. It should be the other way around."@@@@ And the qualified, employed, taxpayers (at least here in the U.S .) wind up paying the expenses for a lot of children carelessly produced by the disqualified breeders. If one tunes into practically any daytime teevee talk show in the U.S . these days, one sees a frightening number of unmarried, unemployed teenage girls absolutely *determined* to have babies of their own.I'd suggest that somebody simply give them a puppy instead -- except they don't look mature enough or intelligent enough to raise a dog, let alone a human being.-- Nanaea

Disturbing...If they indeed wish to become pregnant and not have a husband to share
such great responsibility, which a child is. Then I must agree with you that they are too young to have children yet. I am not sure they realize how much work there is in having children. When you are two then it is alright but alone and even unemployed then it is very rough indeed.Let us hope that if they indeed become pregnant then they have families who is able to support them. If nothing else for the sake of the child.-Selwyn
