Alair and Aliphar
I am looking for the origin and meaning of two names. Alair is male and may be Celtic. Aliphar is female and may have come from or be related to Alair. These names come from a group of Irish, Scots and Scots Irish in Georgia in the early 1800's.

See this thread for the latest discussion of Alafair, of which Aliphar is undoubtedly one of the many alternative spellings that are found:http://www.behindthename.com/bb/arcview.php?id=3660518&board=genAlafair/Aliphar's origin is still a mystery but the best guess now seems to be that it has an origin in Romany culture. Are you sure the male name is Alair and not a mistake for Adair? Adair is a Scottish version of Edgar and often considered a "Gaelicized" version of Edgar.
