We use Makai as a direction in Hawai`i. Makai (toward the sea) and Mauka (toward the mountain) to explain which way to go. As in, "Go that way, Makai!" We also say Diamond Head and Ewa (in O'ahu.)Not thinking it's a name one commonly names their children in my culture since it's a direction. I suppose in Hawaiian and in island talk it's like naming your kid North, South, East, West.Just a little FYI from a woman who is of part native Hawaiian ancestry and is from the islands.
