Do you know which part of India? The name is almost certainly of Sanskrit origin, but the common English spelling (and sometimes the pronounciation) of any Sanskrit word varies across the different linguistic groups in India. The same happens to names from families which have spent a long time outside India, or non-Indians borrowing an Indian name.
