Hm, my theory would be it probably has something to do with brown skin or hair. Like Bruna or Brunette, only Anglicised. Perhaps an Anglicised form of Brunette / Bruna or simply the word "brown" combined with Bernadine / Nadine?

Thanks. She did have brown hair, but didn't really think of that. I just assumed it was some frilly, early twentieth-century name
