Meaning of the name Agron
Does anyone know what the meaning of the name Agron. There seems to be many different meanings and origins but I was wondering which one was the one that is used in Albania.
There is a Hebrew name meaning "vocabulary" and an Arabic name as well as a Greek name.
I assume that the Albanian form is either from the Greek or Arabic but I don't know the meaning of the Greek name. Can anyone help :)

Yes Agron is albanian name and very famous name that is used by the albanians. But the meaning is unknown. The illyrians are forefathers to the albanians.Agron - Son of Pleuratus. Reigned from 250 to 230 BC. Agron had the most powerful force, both by land and sea and the greatest kingdom known to the Illyrians. His kingdom included much of Illyria proper, Epirus and the island of Corcyra. In 231 BC, Demetrius II, king of Macedon, pleaded to Agron for military aid against the Aetolians (Greeks). In a military defeat that rocked Mount Olympus, the brave Illyrian soldiers routed the mighty Aetolians and returned home with great booty. Agron, overjoyed with the news, drank himself into oblivion and died in the winter of 230 BC.

I thought it may have been derived from the Greek word agros meaning "field, land". Do you think that might be possible?Thankyou again for help. :)

If it might be possible? maybe, maybe not. Greek & Albanian have much incomen in history and mythology, the Illyrian mythology is much a like the Greek mythology and the Greek Mythology is based on Illyrian forefathers the pelasgians "sea people" pelagos means in Greek "sea". Their are many names in greek mythology that have been translated with the albanian language. In greek artos means bread and in albanian arta means golden, barbaros in greek "barbarian" in albanian "barabart" equel. Even though albanian and greek falls in two diffrent group in indo-european language they have much incomen, Epirus was a place where greeks & albanian forefather lived together so they have influnce each other in language and in culture, their was illyric-hellenic tribes such as Chaones. Dardania present day Cossovo, the place was found by Dardanos in greek mythology, in greek Dardanos means burn up and in albanian "dardha" pear. Many Illyrian tribes had this kind of name, like mollosi "molle" apel, Dalmati (dalma) "delme" sheep. Illyrius was he who found Illyria, Illyrius means in greek "rule west wind" in albanian "i lirë" free. So as you understand I woulden't say that it is derived from greek word agros because I don't have so much knowledge about the name and I haven't study the name either. After King Agron died his wife Teuta took his place, Teuta is called by historians Queen Katerina Of Illyria, in greek it means pure or clean. Teutic was name of people, the word is also mentioned in Greek & Illyrian mythology. Their are many illyrians that have name that start or end with Teuta. Ag means in albanian dawn for exmpl. It maybe derived from Greek because even the Illyrian Phyrros had a greek name and their was many others like Olympias a Illyrian, daughter to king of Epirus, present Albania. Ipiros means in greek Mainland.
