I've never heard of this name here in Germany, it doesn't sound typical at all, at least the ending doesn't. So if it is German, it must be some historic form; they had some really weird names in the Middle Ages.
But I'm pretty sure that the basic word of the name (if is German or of Germanic origin) is "brown", so it would mean "the brown one". "The brown one" again was used by the Teutons as a synomym for "bear" (they didn't say "bear" for fear of calling it). So the name Bruno actually means "bear" and was given in admiration of its power and fierceness.Hope this helps a bit
