The version that GERMAN is the Russian spelling and pronunciation of the German HERMANN does not seem to me probable.Thare is a Russian name GERMAN, really. It originates from Latine, most probably, as explained in the database.

german is somthing different from Herman.according to the ancient language Avesta of Iranians.
Ger means man as a result german means the mind of man.but Her in Avesta was annoucned as light
as a result herman means the light of mind.I hope I could help you
