Geziena
I'm looking for the meaning of the name Geziena, as one of my family members is wondering what it means. I know that it's a female name, and Dutch, and that sometimes it can be shortened to 'Sien' or 'Gez' and that it can also be changed to 'Gesiena', with an 's' instead of a 'z'.
Any info appreciated
Thanks.

The pronunciation is the same as the Germane Gesine, which is a short form of Gertrude. I did know a German student at university, however, whose full name was Gesine (she was my informant). Another short form is Gesche, the name of a colleague.

To the best of my knowledge, Geziena, Gezina and Gesiena are Dutch forms of Gesina.
According to "Duden - Lexikon der Vornamen", Gesina is an elaborate form of Gesa, a Frisian and Low German diminutive of Gertrud / Gertrude. Both Gesa and Gesina have left their diminutive status behind centuries ago and, according to "Namengebung in Ostfriesland" by Manno Peters Tammena, have been used as names in their own right since at least the 16th century. Tammena also states that the form Geziena could be found in East Frisia in the 18th and 19th century.
