Behind the Name: Message: "Ibis"

I was wondering if anyone knew the meaning of Ibis and where it came from. The best I can put of how it sounds is "eebese". I believe it is female but I've only heard of it on one person before so it might not for all I know. Any information at all would be wonderful.
