As the author of this site is very careful about which sources to use and trust, I personally would look no further than the entry for Arthur here (just follow the link).
The very first sentence of that entry may be the main reason why so many different meanings and explanations are floating around the Internet:
"The meaning of this name is unknown."
It seems that a situation like this is hard to bear for many people. Surely for such a famous name the origin must be known? No, it must not.
You can even turn this into a little game: At a website about given names, check whether *every* name has a meaning given. If yes, game already over.
