What popularised the masculine name Derl in 1929/30 in the USA?
Looking up the recently submitted name Derl here I saw a striking debut of this name with 58 baby boys in 1930, preceded by 5 baby boys in 1929. What event caused this massive spike in popularity? Searching Derl in the English wikipedia did not find a possible trigger.

From what I could find, Derl seems to be another spelling of Darrell. Since Darrell was a popular name around that time it might explain why there was a spike in Derl- it's riding on the coattails of Darrell, but that's just a guess on my part. I couldn't say for sure.
