Looking at Forebears, it appears to be a Philippine invention. Perhaps a variant of Carlito?

Indeed. Looking up the name with Facebook also gives any number of people from the Philippines.

Perhaps it was based on the word war? Forebears does say that it was most popular in 1944, which was during WWII. Forebears also says that it was just as popular during the early 1900s, but I guess forebears is a bit inaccurate when it comes to very early years; the names Gina, and Jennifer appear in 1900.

Maybe it could be a diminutive of a Spanish name, since it has the Spanish diminutive suffix -ito?

I think it would be likely, but as far as I know, no Spanish names start with war-.
