Colman is an Anglo-Saxon name composed of col (coal) and man (man). The most famous bearer of the name was the first Bishop of Lindisfarne. He is said to have been born in Ireland, so in his case Colman may be an Anglicized form of some Celtic name. The Vikings destroyed the monastery of Lindisfarne on 8 June 793, but they picked up the name Colman and spread it across Europe.
