Subject: the name Assata

I can't find the origin of this name anywhere. I have searched for weeks. I know it is from the political activist Assata Shakur. It supposedly means "she who struggles" or "warlike". However, nowhere does it say what country or langueage it's from. Did she pick it out of the clear blue sky. It's suppose to be African.
