I think Sadie/Sally were used as nicknames more often in the past than now - like Jack was for John. The nicknames have become established names.

They are used less often now because it's far less common for children to be given their parents' names. Nicknames like Sally and Sadie were meant to distinguish Sarah-the-mother from Sarah-the-daughter. That's rarely necessary these days.:-)
