Guess it depends from what part of the English-speaking world you are :PCymbaline and its variations is derived from the Greek "kumbalon" denoting the cymbal. The word "chime" has the same etymological root. "Kumbalon" is itself derived from "kumbe" meaning anything hollow (eg a bowl) and was not a very flattering expression.Check out "Cymbaline", a beautiful song by early Pink Floyd .
