Nikolai Karayan hasn't lead a blameless life. The heir to a casino/resort legacy stepped in criminal activity, fraud, money lendering and endless illicit activities, he's tried to make his business more legitimate, but the fact is old habits die hard, and some legacies are hard to escape from. His old man's still around and isn't fond of Niko's business decisions.
Anyway, Niko was the only son of Layla Nazarian, not so secret lover of notorious womanizer Nikolai Karayan I. Born Nikolai Nazarian, he was his father's only son so quickly legitimised and taken into the family. Perhaps that's why he feels so bad about cheating on his wife... but her drunken, depressed behaviour drives him into the arms of his lover, and his cheating causes her vices. It's a poisonous, vicious circle neither can escape from.
Frankie's known Niko since they were kids. They grew up in the same run-down neighbourhood, but as Nikolai Sr's wealth grew, Niko moved to a nicer area. They stayed in contact even after she became a young mum and married her bullying, manipulative ex, Deacon, even after he became a somewhat dodgy business man and she settled into a miserable marriage and mediocre job as a doctor's receptionist. When she divorced Deacon, Niko got back in touch and a relationship slowly bloomed. Things were good for a while, but they've now headed down a dark path again. Because of her family issues and husband's adultery, Francesca has taken to hitting the bottle harder and harder.
Niko and Frankie have three kids together. Their eldest is Francesca's child from her first marriage, and Niko also has a kid with Madeleine Lauriano, new-money socialite and his lover.
Sid had anger issues when he was younger and was very angry and rebellious during his mother's troubled first marriage and after his divorce. He blamed his mother for everything, never took to Niko and left home the first chance he got. Now he's returned to make amends, and seems to be a calmer, more worldly young man who wants to apologise to his mother and get to know her new family. He's also got a wife and daughter of his own now. His wife, Iolanthe, used to be a drug addict but has been clean for over five years now. She's recognised Francesca's alcoholism and is worried about it. Sid's worried too - he suspects something's not right in his mother's marriage and is determined to find out what, for the good of everyone. Isidore and Annie have two lovely daughters - twins Thea and Nina.
Frankie's upset that Sid got married without her knowing, and doesn't really believe the couple's story that it was a cheap, rush-job when they found out they were expecting a baby. Sid's promised he doesn't mean anything by it, but Frankie doesn't believe that.
Sam's just come out as gay and expected his parents to make a bigger fuss than they did. His grandfather, the conservative one, isn't keen and think it's a phase, but Niko and Francesca support their son wholeheartedly. Sam's showing a lot of business acumen and looks fit to follow in his father's footsteps, but he's also got dreams of going to law school next year.
Octavia's the peacemaker and problem solver of the family. She knows that her parent's marriage is on the rocks and wishes she could fix it. She's also pretty creative and talented - she plays the piano and saxophone, paints, and has dreams of some kind of artistic career. She's met Madeleine Lauriano and hates her.
Caz is sheltered yet protective of the family's affairs. He thinks he's tougher than he is and is always looking out for his older siblings and parents. Others think it's adorable at the minute but since he has a huge rebellious streak, he could either grow up to be a force to be reckoned with or a huge problem. He's bonded well with the returned Sid and looks up to his older half-brother. He has an interest and some real talent in martial arts.
Finally, Genevieve, the illegitimate child. She doesn't really know her father thanks to Madeleine's objections to Niko being too much a part of the child's life and doesn't get along with her mother. Creative and frustrated, she's growing up to be rebellious, mature for her age and precocious. Like her mother she speaks French and Italian. She dreams of being an actress, but her mother seems hellbent on crushing those dreams and wants her to go to business school and marry a rich husband.
