DH: King Edward "Ned" Stephen George Buchanan
DW: Queen Héloïse Marion Juliette Louise (Durand) Buchanan-DS: Prince Cyril William Henry Buchanan
-DS: Prince Elias Matthew James Buchanan
-DS: Prince Arthur John Louis Buchanan
-DD: Princess Alice Clara Sophie BuchananThe perhaps inevitable war with France has broken out. Declared in 1881, many are calling it the worst war in Britain's history; hundreds of thousands of mothers have lost sons, wives have lost husbands and sisters have lost brothers. After 2 years, the death toll is calculated at over 500 000, and there's no end to the fighting in sight. It seems likely that conscription will be extended to women, as well as children as young as 16. The royal family's popularity has hit an all time low; they're seen as being unresponsive, unsympathetic and no one trusts the French queen, despite the favt that she's spent more time in Britain than France. Desperate for something to boost their popularity, Prince Cyril comes up with a controversial idea. Cyril is 22, and Elias 18 (I have no idea about ages by this point) and perhaps if they went off to fight, it would boost the family's reputation. Ned is taken aback - Héloïse begins to cry when he suggests it - but advisors say it was a remarkable idea, and so in 1884, Cyril and Elias find themselves on the front line. They're not left completely unprotected, but both prove themselves to be resourceful and quick learners. They live like the ordinary soldiers, who write back telling of the Princes' bravery and down-to-earth manner. The monarchy experiences a huge surge in popularity, but both King and Queen have taken to praying every night for their sons' safety - and the safe birth of their next child. Alice provides a welcome distraction from the worry, and the public are delighted to finally have a little princess.
