Re: Compromise Game
So I wasn’t quite sure what to do and I turned to statistics again. Using the positions of the overall preferred names on our original lists, I created new lists and found the rankings by average and my difference again. (You don’t actually need to read this. It’s just my thought process.)Top 5 Overall Preferred:
1. Caspian
2. Peregrine “Pippin”
3. Hugo
4. Mathias
5. Evander / Rafael1 Caspian 1 Rafael
2 Mathias 2 Caspian
3 Hugo 3 Peregrine “Pippin”
4 Peregrine “Pippin” 4 Evander
5 Evander 5 Hugo
6 Rafael 6 MathiasCaspian 1 [1 / 2] 3
Mathias 4 [2 / 6] 8
Hugo 2 [3 / 5] 8
Peregrine “Pippin” 1 [4 / 3] 7
Evander 1 [5 / 4] 9
Rafael 5 [6 / 1] 7Top Overall Preferred: (Average rating in parentheses.)
1. Caspian (1.5)
2. Peregrine “Pippin” / Rafael (3.5)
3. Hugo / Mathias (4)
4. Evander (5.5)Top Consensus Picks: (Rating difference in brackets.)
1. Caspian / Peregrine “Pippin” / Evander [1]
2. Hugo [2]
3. Mathias [4]
4. Rafael [5]By discarding the least overall preferred (Evander) and the name with the least consensus (Rafael) I got the following list, in order of likely overall preference.Caspian
Peregrine “Pippin”
Hugo
Mathias
Caspian’s definitely my favorite and, based on your original list, it’s your favorite of the names we’re working with. If we decide to go with more than 1 boy, I personally don’t think Caspian and Peregrine “Pippin” work well as brothers because they share similar sounds and have the same ending. I think Caspian would work well as a brother with both Hugo and Mathias, though I lean slightly more towards Hugo because they would share literary references. Some combos:
Caspian Thomas
Caspian Evander
Caspian Jonas
Caspian Diarmad
Caspian Nicholas
Hugo August
Hugo Mathias
Hugo Rafael
Hugo Patrick
Hugo Rory
Mathias Edmund
Mathias Anthony
Mathias Evander
Mathias Eoin
Mathias Tristan———Top 5 Overall Preferred:
1. Sinéad
2. Catriona
3. Maeve / Thea
4. Kathleen / Guinevere “Gwen”
5. Viola1 Sinéad 1 Thea
2 Catriona 2 Viola
3 Kathleen 3 Maeve
4 Maeve 4 Guinevere “Gwen”
5 Guinevere “Gwen” 5 Catriona
6 Thea 6 Sinéad
7 Viola 7 KathleenSinéad 5 [1 / 6] 7
Catriona 3 [2 / 5] 7
Kathleen 4 [3 / 7] 10
Maeve 1 [4 / 3] 7
Guinevere “Gwen” 1 [5 / 4] 9
Thea 5 [6 / 1] 7
Viola 5 [7 / 2] 9Top Overall Preferred: (Average rating in parentheses.)
1. Sinéad / Catriona / Maeve / Thea (3.5)
2. Guinevere “Gwen” / Viola (4.5)
3. Kathleen (5)Top Consensus Picks: (Rating difference in brackets.)
1. Guinevere “Gwen” / Maeve [1]
2. Catriona [3]
3. Kathleen [4]
4. Sinéad / Thea / Viola [5]The weird thing about this list is that most of the top overall preferred names are the ones we disagree about most, so when is discard last place on each list I really get the middle ground names. Personally I’m happy with them, but we could always go about narrowing down the names another way if you don’t like these.Catriona
Maeve
Guinevere “Gwen”
Catriona and Maeve would be tied for most preferred based on the data. I like both very much so I don’t have a strong preference any way. Sibling wise, if we decide on Caspian and have more than 2 children, I think Maeve would work together best. (Having 2 siblings with the same initial letter and another sibling that doesn’t irks me, personally.) If we only have 2, then Caspian and Catriona are either an adorable pair or way too similar. I can’t decide. Of course, if we decide on another boys name then that’s a different story. Some combos:
Catriona Lynn
Maeve Lynn
Guinevere Lynn “Gwen”
Catriona Ruth
Guinevere Ruth “Gwen”So the ideas I have right now are:
1. 2 boys and 1 girl: Caspian, Hugo, and Maeve
2. 2 boys and 1 girl: Caspian, Mathias, and Guinevere “Gwen”
3. 1 boy and 1 girl: Caspian and Catriona (too close?)
4. 1 boy and 1 girl: Caspian and Maeve
5. 1 boy and 1 girl: Mathias and Maeve
6. 1 boy and 2 girls: Caspian, Maeve, and Guinevere “Gwen”
7. 1 boy and 2 girls: Hugo, Maeve, and Guinevere “Gwen”Do you like any of those more than others or do you have any other ideas?

I agree about Caspian and Hugo being a good sibset (also love the lit reference - I’m an english major).
Out of those combos, I like Caspian Thomas, Caspian Diarmad, Hugo August, and Hugo Rafael the most.
I also like the sound of Hugo Peregrine, for some reason, though I understand if you don’t!

I like Caspian, Hugo, and Catriona as sibling names, but that doesn’t both me as much as you. I personally would really love to use Catriona, so if you’d rather do just one child of each gender, that’s fine by me.
For combos, I like Catriona Lynn, Catriona Ruth, and Maeve Lynn.
I also love the idea of more than one middle name (I know, I’m crazy) and I’m really loving the sound of Maeve Catriona Lynn. But again, that’s just me!
I don't think Caspian and Catriona are very similar, in fact the only thing the share, in my opinion, are a first letter and a general "feel" of mystery (I love names that sound like the walked out of a fairytale).I like Caspian, Hugo, and Maeve; Caspian and Catriona; and Caspian and Maeve the best out of those ideas. But as I said, I also really like Caspian, Hugo, and Catriona.

Since you seem to really want to use Catriona, I see two options here.1. We could just name 2, Caspian and Catriona. Caspian Thomas and Catriona Lynn would probably be my favorite match, but I like Caspian Diarmad and Catriona Lynn as well.OR2. We could use your idea of two middle names and have Caspian, Hugo, and Maeve. I love the sound of Maeve Catriona Lynn and that would be a nice way to include Catriona while not having a sibling-set that, in my mind, clashes (so sorry about that, but it really would irk me). I feel like if we use two middle names for one child we should probably use two middle names for all three (though that's really open for negotiation) so I thought Caspian Diarmad Thomas and Hugo Peregrine August might not be too bad. If you have any more ideas or thoughts on this I'd love to hear them.Do you prefer either of those or have another idea?

I understand that it irks you! We can definitely use the second option (and I agree about using two middles for all three). TBH, I really love all of those combos!

Maeve, Caspian, and Hugo! That's great then! So we have Maeve, Caspian, and Hugo: Maeve Catriona Lynn, Caspian Diarmad Thomas, and Hugo Peregrine August. Amazing sibling set! Thanks for playing with me!
