Re: i need to know the meaning of a last name!....
in reply to a message by Kayla
Hi Kayla,As best as I can determine, your last name comes from the eastern French region of Alsace, bordering Germany. It was originally "D'Aigler", meaning "from Aigler", a village and local area in Alsace. This is a common derivation of surnames in France: Disney (as in Walt) was originally D'Isney, "from Isney".The capital "A" and apostrophe may have been dropped upon arrival in the US or even in Alsace, by bearers of the name who wanted to sound "less French". (See comments on German culture below.)The name of Aigler itself probably derives from the French word Aigle, meaning "eagle". There are also places named "Aigle" in France and Switzerland.Alsace is as much German in culture as French; the territory has been held by both countries over the centuries, and German is the common language in many areas of Alsace. "Daigler" spelt thus looks like a German name, and that may have suited the bearers just fine.Hope that helps,Daividh
