Hi,Maya isn't a Native American personal name. It's the name of a civilisation that existed in the Mexico area up until European colonisation.A person doesn't have to be Indian, Jewish, Greek (see Maia) or Native American to have the name Maya. It's quite common in mainstream naming (as you can see in the popularity data here: http://www.behindthename.com/top/search.php?terms=maya).And yes, it's quite common for Native or Aboriginal families to have European surnames like Williams. This can occur one of two ways: firstly, by the imposition of European names on Aboriginal peoples by colonists; and secondly, through intermarriage.
