Mut is clear; Al = adal-, I suppose? Is it used much, Andy? I know a little German, and I've never encountered it, least of all in English!Thanks! I might have known you'd know ...

Yes, "Mut" you will find as "mood" in English, and AL = ADAL. Almut (sometimes Almuth) is fairly rare and old fashioned in Germany; you will hardly meet any Almuts below 45.
