I think it's the sound. It's similar to Hilda and Helma, which aren't very popular today either.EDIT: "... aren't popular" in this context! Aren't!

Hilda and Hulda/hThere is an old Scandinavian name Hulda too, which is considered too "old-lady". But Hilda (and Matilda) are rather popular in Sweden. I think Hilma will be next, as people look for an alternative to the popular Alma and Hilda. Old names come back but in USA Mathilda and Hilda seem to be still unpopular.
