Nikolai in Denmark / Sweden
I was wondering how Nikolai and Nicolai are pronounced in the Scandinavian countries. NICK-uh-lie? I know there's a Danish prince with the name and it ranks fairly high in the popularity charts.Elinor

Agree with Terese. And we have a little prince Nikolai, but that spelling isn't as popular anymore, as it was a few years after our prince was born in 1999. I think the Nikolai spelling topped in 2001, according to the graph I got when entering the name on our name statistic site. Now when it comes to but the spelling Nikolaj (pronounced the same way).... This is on our top 50 as number 22, as of the first six months of 2007. No further records. Not relevant to your question, but I couldn't help it, now that I saw the last part. I hope you didn't mind. Here he is btw: http://kongehuset.dk/publish.php?dogtag=k_en_fam_nik

Swedes and Danes pronounce the name the same way and you're right about the pronunciation NICK-uh-lie.
