How to pronounce Hywel?

How do you pronounce this male Welsh name? Also, is Howell the anglicised form of it, or is it a completely different name?

It can be pronounced both Hew-ell or How-ell. I was told that the pronunciation varies in different parts of Wales which is why you can pronounce it in two different ways.

Hywel with a short u or with a long U.

The Hywel I knew pronounced it exactly like Howell - HOW-el.

I think Hywel is pronounced kind of like HEW-el, but I do know that Howell is the Anglicised form (just click on Howell).
