I have been wondering about the origin of the name Romare.

How did Romare Bearden's mother come up with it? Is it an obvious smush that I'm missing, a surname, a foreign-language word, or just made up via the Scrabble tile method?

Romare Bearden: The Caribbean Dimension by Richard & Sally Price quotes Richard Long, a friend of Bearden's, as saying he was named after a relative who pronounced the name "ROME-ery", although after he became an adult most people pronounced Bearden's first name as "ro-MARE".
