Kira is a name used in the book Atlas Shrugged. I assume it has Russian roots but have also been told it is Persian. Would someone know the true meaning and origin. Thanks

Just a note: the name Kira is in Ayn Rand's We the Living, not in Atlas Shrugged (the protagonist in that book was named Dagny Taggart).

I'm not sure of the history, but as far as I know, the Latin origin of the word Kira is based on light. Kira is also the Persian word for Sun, and a Russian form of Helen (light). The traditional Hindi meaning of Kira is ray.
Kira is also a masculine name in Japan, I believe, but don't know if it has meaning, or what it is.
I'd like to know, as well. I have been called by it for over three decades, thus far.

I personally was named aftrer the muppet, from the dark crystal, who was, in turn, named for the mythological greek nymph Korkira, who was the daughter of the River God, Aesopos.The Greek island Korkyra was named for her. It's apparantly not an uncommon greek name, spelled in different forms. From my research, it seems to be Dravidean in origin, which in turn makes it Indo-european. It's apparantly common in in the sikh religion, I have met three Kira Singhs. I've read something about the name originating from the irish saint Keelis, but I can't find the article at the moment.
I agree with not relying on baby name engines, I was told by one my name meant "princess" in Swahili, and I've found no basis for that. Also, have any of you Kira's noticed that there are more Kira's popping up every year?hah, soon we'll take over the world!
