I have an Indian character in a story I'm writing. I think I'm pronouncing the name right as it is not obscure, but considering my history with pronouncing things, I figured I would run it by the experts here to make sure that I'm right.
Rajani Kapoor
rah-JAH-nee Ka-POOR
is this right?

The stress on the JAH is very non-Indian, though India is a big country and pronounciation changes as we move around. I am setting this character somewhere in the region around Delhi and then the most common pronounciation would be the bisyllabic raj/nee except in deliberately affected/careful pronounciation. (The a in raj is the same as in English cut). rajani will definitely be recognized as the same name, though unusually pronounced.

I'm no expert on Indian names, but I know a good number of Indian people and I tend to pronounce their names correctly...that being said, I agree with your pronunciation.
