Thank you bothI have a feeling "Wladek" is it...I remember that some of the guys he worked with used to call him "Walt" so if Wladek starts with a W instead of a V maybe that's where they got it from.

YesPoles (like Germans) use "w" to represent the sound of the English "v". Check out the Polish names on this site:
