This is a beautiful, unique name. It's one of those girl names that ages well. I certainly wouldn't mind if this was my name. :) Interestingly, I've heard this name also has Arabic origins (written as الوينا), though not I'm entirely sure if this is true and if so, what exactly is the Arabic meaning.
I prefer the pronunciation al-VEE-na, personally.
This is my middle name. My mother named me after a favorite uncle whose middle name was Alvin. She pronounced it Al-vye-na, which I greatly prefer over Al-vee-na. I do get people calling me Elvira instead, and singing the Oak Ridge Boys popular 1980's song to me, not fun.
I find it hideous. It sounds very old-fashioned, and like the name of some old and unattractive character in a fantasy movie.
I like the name, it's very elegant.
It's a very interesting and rare name. I love obscure names like this.
